We’d like to turn the spotlight on Kevin Dias. Kevin is the leader of Ambiki. He guides all of us as we tackle our ambitious dreams to make the world of speech, occupational, and physical therapists better so that therapists can better serve their patients. In addition to helping his teammates realize the vision of Ambiki, he also finds time to contribute to the codebase of Ambiki.
Where are you from and where do you live now?
I am from Lanesboro, MA and currently live in Oyama City, Japan.
Tell us a little about what you did before joining the Ambiki team!
Investment banking and ESL teaching.
What led you to become a developer?
I was frustrated that the student database at the school I worked at was entirely in Japanese (and in Lotus Notes). Students who had been studying there for 10+ years had to keep going through this cycle of getting a new teacher every year that knew nothing about their goals (because the teacher couldn’t access the database). This drove me to try and build a better solution, so I taught myself how to build it and things went from there.
Where did you go to school and what did you study?
I studied Business at Wake Forest University.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like camping, skiing, board games, and cycling.
How long have you been a part of Ambiki? What do you do?
Since the Fall of 2018. I water the plants and take out the trash.
Editor’s note: This is classic Kevin. He minimizes the work that he does and focuses on celebrating the work the team does. He will never, ever say what his title is if you ask him, but he is the Founder and President of Ambiki.
How do you hope to improve the field with Ambiki?
Make all the not-so-fun administrative tasks super easy for therapists so they can focus on the kids they are treating. Eliminate the focus on “productivity” for practice owners by illuminating the real levers that drive their business so they don’t need to alienate their employees and can run a sustainable practice that therapists love working at.
What do you love most about Ambiki?
Working with talented people who want to make a difference. The opportunity to create new and innovative features that improve lives. Watching something you built get used by someone or getting an email that the feature you created helped make their day/life easier.
What is something you learned about therapy as it relates to technology that you did not know before?
I didn’t know what occupational therapy was, at all.
