- The next year, the Wampanoag, a Native American tribe, taught the colonists how to grow crops. The Native Americans taught the pilgrims or colonists what food grows well in the area including potatoes, corn, tomatoes, cacao, peppers, papaya, pumpkin, and avocados. Once the crops were ready to be harvested in the fall, they had a feast for 3 days to celebrate the good harvest. This is considered to be the first Thanksgiving.
